SCOTT CATHCART & THE IRONMAN TRIATHLON

Preparing yourself to do an Ironman properly takes a considerable amount of time, focus, and dedication. To cover 140.6 miles under your own power, there really is no other way around it than training hard, and “logging in the miles.” I started doing triathlons more than two decades ago, starting with the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in 1997, but it wasn’t until 2016 that I stepped up my training enough to do an Ironman. I’ve always been endurance minded, but to swim 2.4 miles, then bike 112, and then run a full 26.2 mile marathon in succession takes another level of physicality.

I was fortunate to have a solid race, leaning on my experience in the Escape over the years, but I am sure I would have benefitted from having a coach. If you are thinking about doing an Ironman, my first suggestion would be to find a great one! But if you can’t find one, or you just want to see how your body adapts to the rigor of Ironman training, click here for a good 16-week training plan from Triathlon Magazine.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!
